چکیده

Since March 2004, an operational land surface temperature (LST) product has been derived from data recorded by ESA’s Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR onboard Envisat). The algorithm, which utilises a nadir-only split window retrieval, will also be applied operationally to data recorded by the AATSR’s predecessors, ATSR-1 (ERS-1) and ATSR-2 (ERS-2), leading to a > 15-year record of global LST data. The target accuracy of the product is 1.0 K at night, and 2.5 K during the day. Extensive comparisons between the operational AATSR LST product and other in situ and satellite LST data sets have been performed at a number of sites around the globe. The results of these studies, whilst generally very encouraging, have highlighted the need for a number of algorithm improvements. We present a summary of the key results where these issues in the current operational algorithm are apparent and describe potential improvements. In particular, we address the issues relating to the resolution of the auxiliary land classification and fractional vegetation data that are used to tune the operational retrieval algorithm to the expected surface and atmospheric conditions at a given location. Presently, these data are tabulated at 0.5 degree resolution and we demonstrate that the product would benefit greatly from increasing the resolution of these data sets. Problems with the sensitivity of the current algorithm to atmospheric and surface conditions are also discussed.

Validation of the Aatsr Land Surface Temperature Product over Inland Waters and Vegetated Surfaces

The Land Surface Temperature (LST) product of AATSR was validated with in situ measurements at two thermally homogeneous sites: Lake Tahoe, CA/NV, USA and a large rice field close to Valencia, Spain. The AATSR LST product is based on the split-window technique using the nadir view of the 11 and 12 μm channels. The algorithm coefficients are provided for 13 different land cover classes plus one ...

The Aatsr Land Surface Temperature (lst) Product: Comparison with Lsts from Seviri

The Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) onboard ESA’s Envisat Satellite, is the third in a series of precision radiometers designed to measure Sea Surface Temperature (SST). Since March 2004, an operational Land Surface Temperature (LST) product has also been available, which is the first of its kind since the (A)ATSR mission began in 1991. This product utilises a nadir-only split-...

Validation and Analysis of Long-Term AATSR Land Surface Temperature Product in the Heihe River Basin, China

The Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) land surface temperature (LST) product has a long-term time series of data from 20 May 2002 to 8 April 2012 and is a crucial dataset for global change studies. Accuracy and uncertainty assessment of satellite derived LST is important for its use in studying land–surface–atmosphere interactions. However, the validation of AATSR-derived LST pro...

An Accuracy Assessment of Aatsr Lst Data Using Empirical and Theoretical Methods

The Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR), onboard ESA’s Envisat Satellite, is a precision radiometer that provides data from which global observations of land surface temperature (LST) can be derived. These LST data are retrieved using a nadir-only split window algorithm, with a target accuracy of 2.5 K during the day and 1.0 K at night. The algorithm will also be applied operationa...

The Proposed Global Land Surface Temperature Product for ENVISAT’s AATSR: Scientific Basis, Algorithm Description and Validation Protocol

This paper provides an overview of, and rationale for, the definition of a multi-channel Land Surface Temperature (LST) data product from the AATSR. Land surface temperature (LST) is an extremely important parameter that controls the exchange of longwave radiation between the surface and atmosphere. Because of the extreme heterogeneity of most natural land surfaces, LST is a difficult parameter...
